What is a Recovery Coach?
Also known as a peer support specialist
According to OASAS(The Office of Addiction Supports and Services), Recovery Coaching is a form of strength-based supports for persons in or seeking recovery from alcohol and other drugs, as well as other addictions.
Self-directed by the recoveree, a Recovery Coach provides expertise in supporting successful change.
Recovery Coaching is goal oriented; a recovery coach will focus on any goals that are important to the individual
A Recovery Coach also:
•Focus on honoring values and making principle-based decisions
•Uses current strengths to reach future goals
•Becomes an accountability partner to help sustain recovery
•Helps the recoveree access recovery services as well as community services needed to support recovery i.e. benefits, health care, housing etc.
Recovery Coaches Do Not

Diagnose or treat substance use disorder

Explore past feelings and trauma (we focus on the future)

Make decisions for the Recoveree

Monitor or report abstinence

Motivate through fear of negative consequences

Prescribe one specific pathway to recovery

Tell a person how to lead a life in recovery
Who would benefit from a Recovery Coach?
•People in recovery from addiction themselves
•People seeking recovery from addictions
•Friends and Family who have been affected by another’s addiction
Who is eligible for a Recovery Coach through FOR-DO?
•Recovery Coaching is provided by FOR-DO’s trained Recovery Coaches, free of charge
•Anyone who is looking to initiate or sustain their recovery, or anyone who has been affected by another’s addiction is welcome
•Must be at least 18 years of age
•Must be a resident of Delaware or Otsego County
